As Miami Dolphins fans celebrate Patrick Surtain Sr. on his 46th birthday, check out some of the best records to know about the legendary Cornerback.
Patrick Surtain II was a first round prodigy out of Alabama but it was his Dad that paved the way for his NFL greatness. Patrick Surtain Sr. was taken 44th overall in the 2nd round of the 1998 NFL Draft out of The University of Southern Mississippi. Surtain did not start in a game during his rookie season, however he got some playing time in every game and managed to pull in two interceptions despite restricted snaps.
Following his sophomore season, the 5’11” 192 lb cornerback became a full-time starter for the Dolphins in 2000 and did not disappoint, tallying a career-high 21 passes defended. Surtain’s best season came in 2002 when he put his hands on display hauling in six interceptions with some great stats, and was invited to his first Pro Bowl after being named to the All-Pro 1st Team.
From 2002-2004, Surtain was invited to three straight Pro Bowls and tallied 17 interceptions in that span. However, #23 was known for more than just his ball-hawking abilities. During his seven-year stint with the Dolphins, Surtain was one of the best coverage corners in the league who’s versatility as a great pass rusher from the outside and support in the run game made him a premier defensive player. The elite defensive back had a nose for the backfield, adding an element to his game that most corners never seem to find.
