Song Review: NMIXX – Run For Roses

JYP Entertainment releases so many music videos and performance videos and extended teasers that it’s become difficult to know which songs to write about on this blog! Run For Roses was first performed last year and isn’t the title track for NMIXX’s upcoming album, but it’s a compelling taste of what’s to come.

Run For Roses is the rare upbeat track that takes advantage of the group’s vocals — a treat for those of us who have been eager to hear more singing and less shouting from NMIXX. The song gives them a rootsy makeover, absorbing a few influences from country music. It’s surprising to hear these elements used this way, but the general vibe works quite well. I mean, when’s the last time you heard fiddle in a K-pop idol track?

Run For Roses takes a melismatic approach to its singing, placing a few satisfying runs at its core and climaxing in a dramatic power note that brings us into the finale with plenty of fanfare. NMIXX are up to the task, and this confidence is catchy. I’m not completely in love with all of the melodic choices, but they have a cinematic quality that catches attention. The track does a nice job segueing between theatrical peaks and more subdued sing-talk, adding a sense of dynamism that keeps Run For Roses engaging throughout.
