Song Review: Young Posse – Young Posse Up (ft. Verbal Jint, NSW yoon & Token)

I still can’t get over the name “Young Posse.” It sounds like something that would’ve been part of an original Disney Channel series — hip-hop as viewed by middle-aged executives. The group’s gimmicky Macaroni Cheese didn’t help alleviate these concerns, but to their credit Young Posse have gone straight to the K-hip-hop well with their follow-up, prominently featuring rappers Verbal Jint, NSW yoon and Token on Young Posse Up.

It’s kind of refreshing to hear a hip-hop themed idol group go full bore into the genre instead of shouting a few lines over a dance beat and calling that “rap.” Young Posse Up isn’t hooky enough for my taste. It plays more like a cypher than a traditional title track and the production isn’t addictive in a way that would make up for the lack of an identifiable chorus. But if their agency truly wants Young Posse to be a credible hip-hop act, this is a step in the right direction.
