Song Review: ICHILLIN – Demigod

ICHILLIN’s music has been on an upward trajectory lately, and last month’s Bite Me impressed with its edgy beat and exciting energy. The girls aren’t wasting any time with a follow up, releasing new digital single Demigod just weeks later.

This song shares so much with Bite Me, succeeding and struggling in the exact same ways. Once again, the track plays it easy with a repetitive, spoken-word hook. And once again, the strength of the production and performance compensates. Demigod is more hip-hop informed and brings me right back to the mid-2000’s with its loose, funky groove. There’s a great sense of space within the instrumental. Rather than overstuff things, each element shines. I love how the slapping percussion competes with cinematic strings during the pre-chorus, then later tussles with rhythmic brass during the hook. I don’t even mind the anti-drop chorus this time around because the beat is so addictive.

A go-for-broke climax would have truly set this over the top, similar to what The Boyz achieved with the explosive bridge in last year’s Watch It. But more than anything, this and Bite Me have me questioning how ICHILLIN suddenly became one of K-pop’s most exciting girl groups!
