Song Review: Moonbyul (Mamamoo) – Think About

Mamamoo’s Moonbyul is gearing up to release her full album at the end of the month, and like so many others she’s kicking off with a pre-release track. Pre-releases usually go one of two ways: either the artist teases with their strongest material, relegating the actual title track to an afterthought, or they shine spotlight on what’s clearly more of a b-side (often a ballad). Only time will tell what the album sounds like, but the buoyant Think About feels much more like the former.

When it comes to sound, Moonbyul’s solo music has run the gamut. She’s often been pigeonholed as Mamamoo’s rapper, but can do so much more than that. Think About is almost entirely sung and has much more of a frothy pop energy than expected. Right from the start, the track gallops forward with upbeat percussion. It stalls a bit during the pre-chorus before diving into an uplifting, strings-assisted chorus.

This is all well and good, but Think About doesn’t reach peak efficiency until its post-chorus kicks in. This is by far the track’s strongest hook. Even a silly “go vroom vroom vroom” exclamation can’t derail its effect. If the entire song had harnessed this same focus, we’d be talking about a definite 2024 standout. As it stands, Think About doesn’t quite reach the heights it promises, but it’s still a wonderfully joyful earworm with an irresistible disco sheen.
