Song Review: IU – Holssi

The release of IU’s new album will be preceded by multiple tracks. We’ve already heard Love Wins All, which has promptly gone on to rule the Korean charts. Now it’s time for something a little more eccentric. Holssi (홀씨) ups the tempo just a bit, giving IU something groovier to play with.

For as long as IU has been a fixture in the industry, I’m always impressed by how well she’s able to utilize trends to her advantage. Somehow, her music never feels like it’s reaching for popularity, yet it always fits squarely within the musical landscape of its time. Holssi is undoubtedly IU, but its cool, percussive sound also feels like an older sister to a trendy group like IVE. There’s an aloofness to both the production and performance that’s quite stylish.

As a song, there’s not a ton to dive into here. However, its compelling vocal arrangement makes Holssi more addictive than its simple structure might suggest. Her clear tone is used effectively, filling the track’s ample space with a mixture of quirky rap and layered harmonies. Overall, the execution feels more thrilling that the song itself, but it’s always nice to hear IU stretch her talent in new directions.
