Fijian Drua have released a strongly worded statement following allegations that No.9 Frank Lomani was racially abused during the team’s stunning loss in Melbourne.
Lomani was sent off for an elbow to the head of Josh Canham, and will face a judiciary hearing later Monday where he’s expected to be handed a lengthy ban.
Lomani, a former Rebels player, was allegedly racially abused as he made his way to his seats after the incident.
“The Fijian Drua are shocked at the racial abuse suffered by one of our players during Friday night’s match against the Rebels in Melbourne,” the Drua said in a statement on Monday.
“Clearly there is no place for racism of any kind anywhere. We all have a duty to protect players and staff from situations which go against the values of our game.
“We are thankful to the Melbourne Rebels for reaching out with an apology and for assuring us that an investigation to identify the person(s) at fault is underway.
“We note that the Tournament [SRP] is also independently assessing the matter. We’re also providing Frank Lomani with the support he needs at this time.
“The actions of one or two individuals will not affect the warm relationship we have with rugby fans in Melbourne, which is truly one of the world’s great sporting cities.”
Lomani and teammate Jone Koroiduadua will face the SANZAAR Judiciary after their red cards in the 41-20 loss.
Koroduadua caught Alex Mafi with a headbutt as the Drua lost the plot.
The Drua coach Mick Byrne told the Sydney Morning Herald the alleged racial abuse was a “disgrace” and the fan involved deserved a lifetime ban.
“It’s a disgrace,” Byrne said. “Our players need to be protected. It’s ridiculous that someone is going to come to a game and stoop to that level in 2024. It should be a safe place for players. They are doing their best every weekend.”
SANZAAR told the paper it was investigating the incident.
