There have been countless video game characters over the years; some good, some bad and plenty of memorable ones. There are lots of components which are needed in order for a video game to be successful. From an immense soundtrack and excellent voice actors to playability and storyline, the best video games are able to seamlessly weave everything together in order to create something truly timeless.
The team here at AllAboutGames decided that now would be a great time to take a look back at some of our favourite video game characters of all time. We do not expect you to agree with our list, as there are way too many memorable characters for us to ever agree with each other.
Minecraft’s Steve
The timeless Minecraft is up there as one of the greatest video games of all time. Enjoyed by gamers of all ages, Minecraft is as open-world as a game can come and filled with plenty of secrets to keep gamers occupied forever. Of course, Minecraft Steve does not have a backstory as he was always designed to be a customisable character, but due to the success of Minecraft, Steve is now known worldwide and is the heroic face of the game.
Interestingly enough, Steve will be played by Jack Black in an upcoming film adaption of Minecraft which is set for release in 2025. What is not to like about Steve then? Steve has a lot going for him because of the fact he has no back story. Steve is essentially a blank canvas which the player adds to himself.
Super Mario
Arguably the most memorable and popular video game character in the history of video gaming, Super Mario needs no introduction and nor does his brother Luigi who could easily have made this list too. Not to mention Wario and Bowzer. Quite rightly regarded as a video game legend, Mario has gone through plenty of evolutions since he was first introduced to gamers in 1981 in the Donkey Kong game. In the most recent Super Mario games, Mario can be seen as a cat and throwing fireballs.
To be honest, there’s nothing really to tell you about Mario which has not already been said. Other than the fact that Super Mario will continue to sell games to new generations.
Sonic the Hedgehog
Beloved by all 90s kids and millennials, Sonic is not quite as popular as he once was. His hay-day was undoubtedly in the late 90s/early 2000’s but the recent Hollywood movies starring Jim Carey as Dr Eggman (Dr Robotnik) has helped to somewhat reignite the character. The first two ever Sonic games for the Sega Mega-drive are arguably two of the greatest games of all time. The simplicity of the side-scrolling epics meant that they were enjoyed by gamers of all ages, they were by no means easy either.
Unfortunately, Sonic the Hedgehog games have rather gone out of fashion these days. The 3D versions of the game never really worked out. There have been several different TV series too, all of which have received mixed success. However, there is no denying the power Sonic had in the early stages of video games, which is why he belongs on our list of favourites.
Rainbow Riches’ Lucky the Leprechaun
Video game characters come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and one of the smallest and cutest of them all may well be Lucky the Leprechaun from the well-known Rainbow Riches series of video slot games. Lucky is there to offer advice and help on pretty much all of the games in the collection which number over 20 games.
Lucky himself doesn’t talk too much, but he’s always there for all bonus games which is the aspect of the game which players’ look to get into. Lucky even has a few of his own games, but the original Rainbow Riches is the one where Lucky made his name and it is the best one in the whole series.
EA Sports Voice Guy
For those of you who need reminding, ESPN brought one of the most memorable and unique voices from all of our childhoods back to life recently. Now the EA Sports guy is not really a video game character as such, but we can guarantee that most gamers will recognise his unique voice instantly. I first heard that voice when me and my brother were playing one of the first FIFA World Cup video games on the Sega Mega Drive.
Unfortunately, sports games made by EA no longer use this legendary voice and EA itself is certainly not the video game developer which it used to be. Nevertheless, I feel that this voice is just as memorable as any video game character. I just hope new generations of gamers hear it too.
