ENHYPEN’s Fatal Trouble is part of a “special album” tied to their Dark Moon storyline. This series comprises music videos, webtoons and web novels. It may be lost on those of us who are casual fans, but these days every K-pop group needs to have lore and ENHYPEN’s apparently includes vampires, werewolves and blood alters. You need to be invested to make sense of it all, and the group’s acolytes will likely wring more from Fatal Trouble than I can.
HYBE seems to love these broody rock ballads. At their best, they offer a cathartic shot of emotion tied to epic melodies. But too often, they’re just kind of angsty for the sake of angst. Fatal Trouble could have been recorded by any of the agency’s acts to similar effect. As an OST to this Dark Moon universe, I suppose it paints mood well. But as a song itself, it feels quite dull.
At just under three minutes, Fatal Trouble is also robbed of the chance to blossom into its full potential. A song like this calls for a dramatic climax, but the guys simply trudge along the same limp arrangement. The chorus offers some drama, but even here the sluggish production counteracts its effusive energy.
