TRENDZ’s music may be more inconsistent than I’d like, but January’s brilliant Go Up instantly landed them in my own K-pop hall of fame. The recently released Glow painted them in a smooth disco funk light and Japanese single Season Of You continues that approach.
This is fluffy, inoffensive summertime pop at its most basic. There’s no harm in that, and plenty of enjoyment to be found if you turn off your inner critic and let the sunny sound hit you on a purely emotional level. Nothing about Season Of You strikes me as unique or essential and the melodies could hit harder. Even so, the song’s pinwheeling energy and amiable performance give it instant good vibes. The bass line works well during the verses and the chorus has a satisfying swell that eventually gives way to an effective key change during the climax. This won’t be a standout on my summer 2024 playlist, but it’ll definitely find a spot among similarly-themed songs.
