Sometimes songwriters do my job for me. If you’re going to call a song “Gibberish,” it had better buck expectations by not being the latest in the long line of ‘K-pop boys mumble and growl random things for two and a half minutes.’ Going into this track, I didn’t exactly have my hopes up. The Boyz’ Japanese work has been hit or miss, to say the least.
Gibberish doesn’t completely avoid tropes, but a hefty dose of rock guitar and stomping beat elevate its sillier instincts. There’s still a random “hakuna matata” in the dire second verse and the chorus is absolutely ridiculous:
“You say blah, blah blah, with the nobi-dobi-da
Shaba-ya-ya, all I hear is gibberish, gibberish”
That couplet could pretty much sum up my critique of many boy group releases. Thanks, The Boyz!
With songs like this, I feel like I need to rate them based on level of obnoxiousness. In that grand scale, Gibberish is… not very. It’s harmless fluff that seems to be in on its own joke. I’d certainly appreciate more melody and less obvious phrasing, but I enjoy the chugging guitar and the few moments their layered vocals take the spotlight.
