Song Review: fromis_9 – Supersonic

Acts within the extended HYBE universe don’t often lack promotion, but fromis_9 are an exception. Perhaps it’s their late move to Pledis Entertainment or that agency’s history of struggles with girl groups, but fromis_9 have fallen into the dreaded “one comeback a year” pattern. Whenever an artist’s discography starts to dwindle, it becomes vital that each and every song fires on all cylinders.

fromis_9 have developed a remarkable consistency when it comes to quality, and I think many listeners will find Supersonic a continuation of that run. However, I’m going to be the grumpy naysayer on this one. Supersonic is a well-crafted, well-performed song that does nothing for me. It’s a matter of preference, and largely comes down to the way its chorus is constructed.

Supersonic‘s verses are its most interesting element, especially when the instrumental gets going during verse two. But rather than take off during its centerpiece, the song stalls as we hit the chorus. Muted synths recall my least favorite aspects of the once-popular future bass genre as the melodies stretch in a way that slows momentum even as fromis_9 bring the drama with powerful vocals. The full package just doesn’t fit together, leaving a disappointed pit in my stomach.
