Song Review: ILY:1 – illang (Firework)

Earlier this year, ILY:1 transitioned to a funkier pop sound that suited them well. IMMM wasn’t able to sustain its strengths for its entire three minutes, but acted as a runway to what could become a unique sound for the girls. New single illang (Firework) jettisons much of that promise, reverting to a standard summery trop-bop approach.

I happen to enjoy this vibe, despite its omnipresence during a few years in the mid-to-late 2010’s. Firework‘s synth chirps and bouncy rhythm present a familiar texture, but the energy is bright and enticing. However,  rather than using this production as a starting point for something bigger and bolder, the track simply traces the lines of its groove. The verses are largely disposable without any melodic highlights. The chorus is stronger, but pitched too high to comfortably accommodate the group. It’s a perfectly serviceable comeback that makes me want to listen to stronger songs within this genre.
