Song Review: Hiromitsu Kitayama – Comic

It’s a weird time to be a Kis-My-Ft2 fan. The group’s latest album (their first in four years) was easily their worst — a project I listened to once and never returned to. Yet after leaving the group, Hiromitsu Kitayama has unveiled a musical breadth and creativity only hinted at during his time with Kisumai. I’m delighted for him, and wish to see the same ambitions reflected in his former group. 2023’s RANSHIN was a spectacular solo debut and the just-released Comic might prove to be even stronger.

This song is taken from Kitayama’s first full album and does a great job distilling his ferocious rock-meets-rap sound. Right from the start, we’re blasted with a blend of pummeling guitar and icy synth. This energy never wanes except for the times the track decides to switch things up and become even more aggressive. It’s a lot to take in on first listen. You’re steamrolled by unyielding force without a moment to catch your breath, but the pieces quickly come together as each hook builds upon the momentum.

Comic‘s craziest moments arrive during its second half, when the song splits itself open and transitions to a jarring chant. This escalating energy serves to pull us into two speed rock breakdowns. It’s disorienting and feels at odds with the rest of the track, but this is clearly intentional and ends up making Comic even bolder and brasher as it hurtles toward its finale.
