Five For Friday: September 6, 2024

Greetings, Decibel readers!

This week, we have two bands with “God” in their name. And two bands from Ireland. And two bands from the Netherlands!

Alas, there’s only one from Canada, but they have really cool album artwork, so it’s ok.

Enjoy!

God Dethroned – The Judas Paradox

God Dethroned, arriving to us with their 12th album, is by now a long-established blackened-death metal institution. The Dutch outfit continues its blasphemous warpath in the vein of Swedish bands like Necrophobic and Naglfar, constructing reliably catchy and muscular tunes laden with atmosphere and aggression in equal measure.

God Is An Astronaut – Embers

I normally wouldn’t put a post-rock band on this list, but God Is An Astronaut is one of a few that has penetrated the metal periphery with their energetic take on the style. Likewise, I’m not partial to instrumental music, but there’s so much going on here that it makes for a thoroughly engaging listen. In a just world, this would be the soundtrack to a feature motion picture. Fingers crossed!

Grave Sermon – Liturgical Perversions

Love the sheer brutality on display here. Grave Sermon will be a boon to fans of Gateways-era Morbid Angel who want their summoned redemption to include additional guidance from Deicide, Vader and perhaps a slight note of Asphyx in there as well. Brilliantly organized chaos.

Korrosive – Katastrophic Creation

So I totally checked these guys out on a lark, knowing nothing about them. And man I’m glad I did, as they deliver all the deathy-thrash metal goods. And it has RoboCop on the cover. You’re coming with them, creeps!

Officium Triste – Hortus Venenum

But now to slow things down, a lot. Officium Triste is a great band for fans of Draconian who would prefer the gothic elements dialed back a bit. Melancholy distilled to its purest form.
