A K-pop act’s title track isn’t always the best song on their album, even if it’s the one most people will hear. Sometimes, b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of K-pop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.
ONEWE tried their hand at a more upbeat title track with Off Road, but there’s a stronger version of this sound hiding at the end of their new album. A Piece Of You (유일한 사랑이니까) melds their rock intensity with a bit of synthpop, resulting in a compelling sound that reminds me of the indie groups I used to love in the mid-2000’s.
This song has been stuck in my head all week. The bouncy synth loop that opens the track is pure perfection, bright in tone but sharp in execution. It sets the stage for an energetic track and frames the standout chorus with plenty of verve. Frontman Younghoon still manages to rattle off some strong power notes, but A Piece Of You is far more nimble than the band’s usual approach. It sounds like they’re having a good time and that sentiment is infectious. The song doesn’t skimp on the drama either, unveiling a powerful guitar solo as we head into the climax.
