Crush (from The Awakening – 2017)
GFriend’s music was often bolstered by new jack swing elements even if it never pushed definitively in that direction. Crush is the closest they got, tying a mystical tone to funky percussion that gives the song a distinct presence. It actually reminds me of something we might hear from WJSN, but their music was often in conversation with GFriend. Crush could harness a stronger set of melodies, but the track is really all about its groove and I definitely can’t fault it under that criteria. This whole album marked the sound of GFriend growing up, and Crush offered a stylish midpoint between the old and the new.
