Song Review: tripleS ∞! – Untitled

I’m losing track of how many tripleS sub-units we have now, but I guess the sprawling nature of the project is kind of the point. Less than a month after the debut of Visionary Vision, we have a Japanese single by the newly-unveiled “∞!”. This unit takes a moodier approach, utilizing now-ubiquitous musical elements from the early 2000’s.

Requisite NewJeans comparison aside (I know, you’re sick of every song being compared to them), Untitled employs skittering drum and bass over moody synths and R&B flourishes. It’s sprightlier than these songs often are, and more rooted in melody. I’ve long since lost interest in this style of instrumental, but Untitled‘s soft chorus engages me on a different level.

There’s a hypnotic quality to this track that works in its favor. The melodic range is relatively flat, though the verses are more adventurous than the chorus. However, there’s something about the texture at Untitled‘s core that hits the sweet spot and gives it unique appeal. The song also feels fleshed out, delivering a brief bridge and satisfying contrast. It won’t go down in history as a huge release. I may not even recall it in a month’s time. But as a far as this style of track goes, Untitled finds its own lane.
