Rather than release longer albums, Nowadays have blitzed their debut year with a steady stream of single tracks. This isn’t an awful approach if you keep the music coming and that music catches on with the public. Unfortunately, the group has found difficulty breaking through and competing with the year’s buzzier rookies. I haven’t yet connected to any of their songs either. I’m not sure new single Let’s Get It (렛츠기릿) will change that trajectory, but it takes a few tentative steps in the right direction.
Let’s Get It is at its best when targeting a high energy dancefloor pulse. The beat stops and starts too often to be effective, but I love the moments when the song throws caution to the wind and simply puts four to the floor. This instrumental makes the chorus more enjoyable than the forgettable verses, but even here Let’s Get It is marred by an unadventurous hook. Since when did repeating “Let’s get it now” over and over become enough to center a K-pop title track? Melody is truly a lost art these days, making music like this feel threadbare and disposable. Trends come and go, but a great melody is timeless. Nowadays haven’t harnessed that asset once since their debut, making me worry their discography will pass by without leaving a lasting impact.
