Me Gustas Tu (from Flower Bud – 2015)
Sometimes it’s so weird what makes a song popular. I have to remind myself that most people aren’t like me: voracious seekers of new music. Casual listeners need great songs pushed in their face, and Me Gustas Tu found much of its fame from a viral video where GFriend bravely contended with a very slippery (and unsafe!) stage. But what made Me Gustas Tu truly legendary is the fact that the actual music is fantastic.
Early in their career (this was only their first comeback!), GFriend already realized the potential of their “powerful innocence” approach. Me Gustas Tu is a pinwheel of a pop song, effortlessly moving between sweet melodies and intense stabs of drama. Its sugary keys coexist with robust electric guitar, forging a blend that’s bursting with energy.
Like many great pop songs, Me Gustas Tu bounds out of the gate with its chorus. You know a composer is confident in their melodies when they’re not afraid to unveil the main course right from the start. From here, Me Gustas Tu delivers an assembly line of hooks, each building flawlessly upon each other. The song climaxes with a breathless guitar-laced dance break, kicked off by an octave-shredding Yuju power note. This all materializes after the three minute mark, where many modern K-pop songs would call it a day and fizzle out.
