I feel like I may have inadvertently cursed NINE.i by placing them atop last year’s “Top 50 Songs” countdown. Since then, they’ve had agency issues and — apart from some great solo releases from leader Vahn — have been musically inactive. That changes today with the release of new Japanese single Mirage (蜃気楼).
Sadly, the guys don’t have producers Sweetune in toe this time, but Mirage‘s light pop sound echoes their 2023 work. It’s an amiable track, offering optimistic melodies and a bubbly arrangement. The song does nothing new or noteworthy, but by employing so many classic pop tricks it remains pleasant and upbeat all the way through. Guitar and synth forge a satisfying arrangement, buoying the song’s airy melodies. If nothing else, it’s nice to hear from the guys again. I just wish Mirage took a more adventurous route.
