I don’t usually write a song review unless there’s an accompanying music video, but a disbandment (?) single warrants at least a brief mention. I put a big question mark in that last sentence because it’s unclear whether fromis_9 will remain together after leaving Pledis Entertainment, though history doesn’t set a rosy precedent.
This departure occurs just after the group’s recent single Supersonic found growing chart success. It’s been clear for awhile that fromis_9 have what it takes to be one of the industry’s leading girl groups, but that never seemed to be the plan when it came to promotion. So, we have digital single From to cap a discography full of highlights.
Immediately upon pressing “play,” I was pleased to hear that From is not some sappy ballad. Instead, the song has a surging synthpop sound — atmospheric and sentimental but powered by an upbeat energy. There’s a warmth to both the vocals and production that suits the song well and eases the pain of this big transition. It’s nice to hear such a straightforward performance, driven purely by vocal melody with enough range to keep things interesting.
