K-pop idols thrive on building a steady, dedicated fan base. This is most often accomplished by a constant stream of releases and deluge of content. But within the vast K-pop industry, there are more than a few “one hit wonders” – acts who release one single or album and are scarcely heard from again. It’s time to look back at some of these unknown treasures and give them the attention they deserve.
I’m really stretching the definition of “hit” with this one because it may be the most obscure track I’ve ever featured on the blog. Apart from the audio someone uploaded to the internet, the only proof Deep was ever promoted is an extremely grainy YouTube video (embedded below for you viewing please… if you can make out any details). If a music video ever existed, it seems that it’s lost to time. That’s a big if, though.
But here’s the thing: sometimes you find the best buried treasures deep in the ocean where no one else is looking. XR (“Xtra Ravers”) debuted in 2005 and released exactly one album with the slightly misleading title “Techno Sensation.” The whole album is very good but Deep is its definite standout. I’m a huge fan of Wonder Girls’ 2015 album Reboot and Deep feels like the spiritual predecessor to its sound. The track is every bit as good as the songs on Reboot, which is saying something. I love the mix of cool, aloof vocal melodies and ultra-dramatic production. 80’s synth beats meet searing electric guitar, giving the song a larger-than-life appeal. I wish I knew what happened to this promising duo after the release of Deep, as their online press release confidently states that they are “expected to have a long life with many loyal fans.” Well, they’ve gone one huge fan in me! Anyone else want to join the club?
