Water Flower (from LOL – 2016)

Right from the start, Water Flower’s live band sound captures my attention. It’s not a production style GFriend used often, but it fits them like a glove and adds a ton of oomph to this song. I love how the track opens with a full thirty seconds of instrumental before bounding into its first verse. We just don’t hear that patient approach any more in pop music. Water Flower goes on to blossom into a highly energetic track with a multi-part chorus that serves as a big highlight. It has such an effusive sound, like a series of exclamation marks bundled together. This is bubblegum for sure, but sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
