Song Review: WEi – Not Enough

Angsty rock influences seem to be a major driving force in recent boy group material, following in the footsteps of TXT’s successful rock makeover in 2021. The latest group to mope around with guitars is WEi — an act who has changed styles more than once throughout their idol career. Unfortunately, new single Not Enough brings nothing new to this sound and hesitates when it would be better off going for the pop/rock jugular.

There’s a great moment right before Not Enough‘s final chorus when its electric guitar is fully unleashed, shredding through a brief solo. New-gen K-pop groups tend to dole out these spikes of drama in short bursts rather than infuse their entire track with a similar level of dynamic energy. Too much of Not Enough simply plods along, mired in its moody angst without finding the moments of catharsis that make that moodiness worthwhile. Its chorus comes closest to opening the emotional floodgates, but feels too measured for its own good. Coupled with dull melodies, the song fails to excite. It’s perfectly serviceable in every way and will likely appeal to fans of the genre, but I’ve heard much better versions of this over the past few years.
