Guts Club, that experimental doomgaze trio from New Orleans that we premiered a couple years ago, is back as an experimental doomgaze quartet, now with a baritone sax in the mix. The new single they’re unleashing, “Remember the Mountains,” finds the fearsome foursome—Lindsey Baker (guitar/vocals), L. Jett (baritone sax/synth), Abbey Byers (drums/bell), Violet Jimenez (guitar)—grinding through a haunting seven-minute meditation on longing to return to a place that may not want or accept you. It’s heavy both lyrically and musically, building to a throbbing drone, punctuated by deep sax blasts and mournful vocals.
The new single is the first from the band’s upcoming second album, Please Come Back to the Farm, which was recorded live in (mostly) one take by Nick Pope at Color Tone Studio in New Orleans. The four-tracker is set for release on March 14, but you can purchase the single, which releases today, and preorder the album here. Also check out some live dates listed below the single.
This is how the band described the new single:
“‘Remember The Mountains’ examines conflicted feelings of home, safety and family. The farm acts as both a literal farm within the requisite structural and rural spaces, as well as a metaphoric sense situated inside the narrative of queer kids growing up in small, conservative communities.
Two of us were raised on differing ends of Appalachia. We both continue to experience strong feelings of sentimentality that run counter to our identities. We want to go back home, to run with the horses, to look out over the mountains, but this is often physically unsafe and emotionally challenging.
The lyric ‘remember the mountains and how you could never move them, cause the farm stood in your way’ describes a longing to reconnect with our birth communities met with the inflexibility of conservative ideologies to safely allow for that. We cannot move mountains, we cannot change people’s minds.”
