Song Review: LUN8 – Butterfly

Fantagio’s LUN8 have pinballed from trend to trend, not yet landing on a sound that distinguishes them from K-pop’s always packed crowd of rookie acts. New single Butterfly (나비) shifts style yet again, though this time they’re attempting something a bit more ambitious and unique.

This transformation comes alongside a shift in members. One has left permanently, two are on hiatus and Fantasy Boys contestant Yuma is slated to join soon. This is all very tumultuous, making Butterfly an opportunity to establish a “version 2.0” of the group. The song certainly feels different, slowing the tempo but upping the drama. Traditional elements collide with modern production, crafting a performance piece that’s more “theater” than “stadium.” The guys sound fantastic. Their vocals match the bombast of the instrumental, which isn’t an easy task. However, this is the type of song that’s best experienced alongside the visual performance. Without melodies as engaging as its production, Butterfly is more admirable than thrilling.
