Song Review: BTOB – Love Today

When last we heard from BTOB, they were peddling the kind of emotive ballad they’ve become known for. This is a group that’s comfortable with its own sound and image and doesn’t often feel the need to switch things up drastically — even when they’re embarking on a new journey under their own agency. As its title might suggest, Love Today is another pleasant — but predictable — notch on their belt.

This time, the guys have bolstered their formula with a bit of rock bombast, bringing guitar and big percussion into the mix. Quiet verses give way to a hulking chorus. This contrast might be more effective if we hadn’t heard it a million times before in other songs. The soft stillness of verse two is the song’s most striking moment, but Love Today lacks the melodic bite that would have me coming back for more. The chorus feels obvious and clunky, down to the climactic “la la la” refrain that closes the song. In a discography as huge as theirs, there’s no way this single isn’t getting lost in the shuffle.
