I’ve been a fan of Norway’s Barren Womb since their 2014 debut, The Sun’s Not Yellow, It’s Chicken. The duo of Timo Silvola (drums) and Tony Gonzahl (guitar/vocals) have since delivered regular offerings of angular and pulsating “electronic rock/noise/hardcore” that land somewhere between the Refused, Daughters and NoMeansNo on one end, and the “Bigs” (Business and Black) on the other. Their fifth album, Chemical Tardigrade was issued last year and the pair have been hitting the blacktop pretty hard since, including a trip overseas last summer. As they gear up for another run of dates, along comes their latest video for the single “Bug Out Bag.” And today we’re premiering said video. Sort of.
Directed by transgressive director/photographer/artist/musician, Hanna Fauske, the latest Barren Womb video has already been aired at short film festivals in Tromsø and their native Trondheim. But outside of Scandinavian art houses, Decibel has managed first non-Euro dibs and a-way we go!
Drummer Silvola had this to say about the video and working with the Norwegian contemporary art scene legend: “It was a fun process being on the shoot with Hanna, which usually involves weird makeup, smokes and something disgusting. Luckily for us she skipped the disgusting part! The spark for this little pyromaniac ditty came in the form of a recently freed jailbird. I was chilling out in my local park one night when I encountered this amphetamine-hazed street urchin. He was building a bonfire of books under this ancient maple tree. I took upon myself the task of talking the guy out of this atrocity and the heated discussion became the lyrics for the song. I’m proud to report that no books were burnt that night! We’ve worked with Hanna on several occasions from photo shoots and videos to playing in a band together (Twin Serpent). She’s an absolute powerhouse of the weird and you can check out some of her art at hannafauske.com.”
