Song Review: CRAVITY – Jelly Bean

To K-pop fans, J-pop’s extended promotional schedule might seem crazy. The audio of CRAVITY’s new single Jelly Bean was released all the way back in mid-February, but the physical single and music video weren’t available until today. This gives J-pop acts a nice window to promote up until their release date rather than save all promotion for after the CD is in the shops. It’s an old-fashioned approach, for sure.

Jelly Bean melds nicely with the lighter bubblegum pop side of CRAVITY’s discography. If you enjoyed songs like Groovy and Party Rock, you’ll probably like this as well. It’s not as memorable as either of those singles, but its bright disco sound is a good match for the group. A familiar whistled loop kicks us off, quickly segueing into a bounding verse. My favorite aspect of the song is its chorus. The melodies here aren’t complex or inventive, but the hook has a nice energy that’s hard to resist. This won’t be at the top of any playlist, but it makes for a nice, breezy addition to my spring/summer mix.
