Though they’re primarily based in Japan, JYP girl group NiziU has global ambitions. Love Line (운명선) is their second Korean single, further establishing the girls as part of the K-pop landscape. And while it may exist between markets, the song itself borrows from girl group sounds of the past for a flavor that feels unique in 2025.
At its best, Love Line feels like a modern interpretation of the quirkier side of Lovelyz’ discography. The spoken-word pre-chorus is straight from that group’s treasure chest and the herky jerky production also melds the abrasive and hypnotic in a way that feels quite familiar. I applaud the attempt to break free from the ‘easy listening’ side of K-pop favored by many of NiziU’s peers.
Sadly, the song’s vocals are preventing me from enjoying this. I’ve had issues with the vocal arrangements in NiziU songs since their debut, and this time the song forces powerful notes that feel incredibly sharp and shouted. It comes across as strained and uncomfortable, and gets more challenging as the song goes on. I beg the producers to lower the key just a bit for both the group and listeners’ sake. It’s a shame because the track itself has plenty of charm and points a promising way forward for their Korean career.
