Despite a promising start, girl group Billlie has experienced some growing pains as they attempt to carve out their musical niche in the K-pop market. Today, they’ve opted for their first unit track. Snap brings together lead vocal Moon Sua and lead dancer Siyoon on a hard-hitting hip-hop track. While it may showcase some skill, the song itself does nothing for the group’s burgeoning legacy.
From the outset, this style of idol hip-hop track is not for me. Its blend of undulating bass and pots-and-pans percussion has been done to death and triggers too many pressure points in my brain to make the music listenable. Something about the tone of these instrumentals now feels like nails on a chalkboard to me. I really wish the K-pop industry would lean into different styles of hip-hop. The genre is so much more than the shout-rap “I’m the best” posturing idols churn out over and over (and over) again.
Imagine my eye twitching every time the girls shout “snap!” in the hook and you’ve got a great image to anchor this review. Moon Sua and Siyoon perform everything well enough but none of it feels authentic and doesn’t highlight their strengths. Guest rapper Sokodomo is brought in for the briefest of verses — almost as an afterthought. As one of the track’s composers, I guess they felt he needed a cameo. To be honest, I’m not sure anything about this track was needed at all.
