Abby Trott Interview: Professional Voice Artist Talks Demon Slayer, DanDaDan, and Smash Bros.

Gamers Heroes

I have tremendous respect for your voice acting! Your work as Nezuko Kamado in Demon Slayer is truly fantastic. On that note, Nezuko is a demon that has been through a lot, going through many pivotal moments throughout the series.

You’ve done a fantastic job capturing her raw emotion – what went into capturing this character’s signature voice?

Abby Trott

First of all, thank you so much! It has been such an incredible joy and privilege to be a part of Demon Slayer over the past six years.

I’m definitely inspired by Akari Kito’s incredible performance as Nezuko in the original Japanese – Nezuko doesn’t speak that often, but Kito-san does an amazing job at making sure we feel the weight of her words when she does have something to say!

As a human, Nezuko has a warmth and kindness in her voice that comes across even when she is being firm with Tanjiro. As a demon, she has both innocence and ferality.

In early stages of setting the voice, one of our producers from Aniplex was in the room, Hiroe Tsukamoto, and she wanted to make sure that when Nezuko turned into a demon, growling and fighting, she was wild and ferocious and not too cute.

Gamers Heroes

Even though Nezuko has been through a lot, she has also has lighter moments throughout Demon Slayer. How have you been able to strike this delicate balance in voice acting?

Abby Trott

Both the animation and Kito-san’s performance make it much easier to tackle those lighter scenes. I get to preview the scenes and dialogue before I come in for a take in English. The comedic scenes are kind of an emotional relief from the drama for both the audience and the actors.

Gamers Heroes

Another famous role of yours I love is DanDaDan’s Momo Ayase! This character has been described as “bold, confident, and fierce” – what’s it like channeling that energy in your voice work?

Abby Trott

I love Momo! She is such a badass.

Again, I’m greatly inspired by the original performance by Shion Wakayama. She brings this rawness to the role- a kind of “unrehearsed” feeling that I wanted to maintain in English.

I try to make her sound unpolished, and our voice director Alex von David has an amazing ear for the more comedic, “uglier” takes. Momo has a different energy from me in real life, and it’s such a rush for me to voice her!

Gamers Heroes

You’ve also done fantastic work singing in video games – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s main theme “Lifelight” is truly wonderful. It always makes me smile whenever I boot up the title!

What was it like singing such an iconic song for such an iconic video game?

Thank you so much! I’ve been a Nintendo fan all my life, so this was something truly special.

When I auditioned, I didn’t know what the song was for. I cried when I found out! I still remember seeing a video of the game’s release at the Nintendo store in NYC, and they were playing “Lifelight” as everyone was swarming the shop – I still get shaky when I think about it. It’s still surreal to me.

Gamers Heroes

Finally, I’ve met a number of creative people that would love to enter the voice acting space! What advice would you give to those looking to follow in your footsteps?

Abby Trott

I’d say to find out what you are good at and work on your skillset. Definitely make sure your acting chops are up-to-par!

A lot of people newer to voiceover will focus on “doing a voice” as opposed to “telling the story.” The ability to take direction and make adjustments is imperative to having a fruitful career. Try some acting classes or voiceover classes if you can!
