Aimers are one of those under-the-radar groups who I’ve written about several times on the blog yet can’t for the life of me remember. I know they’ve released music that I’ve (at least somewhat) enjoyed, but no song has taken hold in a way that would make me easily recall it a year or two later. So essentially, they’re a blank slate.
The buoyant Starry Night is quite enjoyable as well, though like past efforts I’m not sure it will have a long life on playlists. The song embraces a light, refined funk sound that borrows liberally from city pop. The sound is upbeat and fun, yet lacks the personality and punch to stand out among many other similar tracks from idol groups over the years. This is mainly due to Starry Night‘s melodies, which trace the lines of the instrumental’s chunky bass without developing hooks that stand out on their own. The song is a toe-tapper in the moment, but I’m not sure I could hum it back a few hours after hearing it. It dissolves as it goes on.
With that said, Starry Night‘s sprightly energy is enough to warrant a place as pleasant filler on a spring playlist. I don’t think “pleasant filler” is what Aimers need at this point in their career, so make of that verdict what you will. However, it could have been much worse.
