It’s getting more difficult to decide which songs to write a review for on this blog. NiziU’s b-side What If (만약이라는 건 없어) is promoted by a “track video” today, which is basically a different term for a (somewhat budget) music video. I’m not sure whether the group will be performing this on music shows and I don’t think it can be considered a “single” in the traditional sense, but the song certainly eclipses title track Love Line.
It’s fun to hear a girl group try their hand at a straightforward rock song. In this sense, What If feels far more in line with modern J-pop than K-pop, which isn’t surprising given NiziU’s roots. Unlike Love Line, this is a strong showcase of their vocals and gives them a robust soundscape to play in. The song lacks the megawatt hooks of an excellent title track, but proves addictive in the long run thanks to its sturdy construction and anthemic melodies. A more unique touch would have raised What If‘s prospects, but for those looking for a timeless, wistful sound this is definitely one of the stronger girl group tracks of the past month.
