RANDOM PLAY
Going into this album, I was keeping my fingers crossed for another song like last year’s hey! hey!. I’ll probably be hoping for that each time TWS make a comeback because I love that song so much and anthemic rock music really suits them as a group. Try With Us doesn’t have a track in this style, but guitar is still used liberally throughout. The biggest example of this is Random Play.
Rather than go full arena rock, Random Play melds bouncy synthpop, hip-hop and guitar distortion into a catchy mix. As usual with this group, both the verses and chorus offer chances for powerful vocal turns. This is when the song is at its best. The plonky second verse doesn’t do a whole lot for me, but I love the extended melodic lines in verse one. Meanwhile, the chorus has a wide-eyed energy that feels like embarking on an adventure. The melodies here could be more full-throated and memorable, but the hook has real pulse that keeps it endearingly upbeat.
