Sadly, our fine feathered friend, Waldo, pecked off a few years ago and is no longer reviewing the latest extreme metal releases for us, but we’re quite sure that he would have lost his shit (as he was prone to do after squawking “Bombs away!”) over the latest single, “Get What Ya Given,” from Aussie grind fiends, King Parrot. Hell, we lost our shit after a viewing this two minute performance video for a track that is an im-peck-able demonstration of the kind of grindcore that can only originate from a former penal colony. It’s ugly, dirty, nasty and full of rage-filled angst. The track is taken from KP’s first full-length, A Young Person’s Guide To, since 2017’s Ugly Produce, so these dudes—Andrew “Squiz” Livingstone-Squires (guitar), Matt “Youngy” Young (vocals), Wayne “Slatts Everyday” Slattery (bass), Ari “Mr. White” White (guitar), Max Dangerfield (drums)—have had some time to develop a good angry lather in the meantime, as evidenced by this blistering new track.
Production of A Young Person’s Guide To was overseen by Livingstone-Squires and Young and was recorded at Melbourne’s Dangertone studios with engineer Luke Walton. It’s set for release on vinyl, CD, cassette and digitally on June 6 via Housecore Records. Place your preorder here. And check out the band’s Australian and U.S. (with Pantera and Amon Amarth) live dates below the video.
Matt Young had this to say about the new single:
“After experiencing the loss of two of my closest friends in 2023, the experience of grief and life hit not only me, but the entire band in a heavy way. We lost our greatest friend and ally Boyd Synnott in 2023 who had done several of our album and EP covers, countless art and merch ideas, as well as acting and helping produce our music videos. This loss crushed us, but also helped fan the fire and drive motivation to push forward with this new album. This song particularly deals with grief, loss and the pressure of everyday life that some find so suffocating. This is an homage to the friends we’ve lost, and to anyone who struggles with this shit. We are grateful to have heavy music as an outlet and channel to work through it all. We have the live shows to come together with our people, celebrate the music and blow off some steam, it’s a pretty damn good deal.”
