Rose is an interesting display of time travel. NCT’s Taeyong is still on hiatus as he fulfils his military service. This song was first unveiled in 2021 and the video premiered during an event last year. Now, it’s finally made its way online in time for Korea’s Rose Day. I don’t think we can call it a “single” per se, but it’s a nice little treat for fans waiting for his return.
A collaboration between Taeyong and Red Velvet’s Seulgi practically begs to be covered on this blog, but this style of song has never been for me. The instrumental combines airy coffeehouse softness with the occasional plonky percussion. The melodies waft around in an almost freeform way, crafting a vibe rather than a sharply structured pop track. On the plus side, both artists sound great (Seulgi especially), but there’s no shortage of great singers to enjoy in this world. I’m more interested in the song itself, which probably isn’t the right mindset to successfully enjoy music like this. I hope Rose finds its fans, because I know how long military hiatuses can feel when you love an artist.
