German black metal outfit Cineastre formed in 2018 with the goal to blend black metal with dark folk, releasing a slew of splits and EPs before releasing their eponymous debut full-length in 2023. Since then, they’ve released an EP and are now gearing up for the summer release of their sophomore album, Hymnen an die Nacht.
As you’ll hear on new single “Mondscheintrunkene Lindenblüten,” Cineastre pick up on a similar page to where they left off, leading with a folky intro before launching into a burst of ripping black metal that transforms back to dark folk by the song’s end. The song highlights on of Cineastre’s biggest strengths: restraint. The folk parts of “Mondscheintrunkene Lindenblüten” feel like organic parts of the song rather than overlong bookends, and the band doesn’t repeat itself after making a point.
“The first single from our sophomore full-length album Hymnen an die Nacht (Hymns to the Night) is an interpretation of a poem by the late Romantic writer Heinrich Heine,” Cineastre tell Decibel. “The beginning of the poem depicts two lovers beneath a moonlit lime tree, with Heine describing the beauty of their interaction. However, in the second part of the poem, the mood shifts toward a longing for winter and its harsh beauty. We aimed to reflect this shift in our song: the second half is much more furious and expresses this yearning for storms and freezing cold.”
You can experience Cineastre’s hymns to the night when Black Lion Records releases the whole album on July 25 but you can hear their new song now.
