Song Review: N.Flying – Everlasting

It’s crazy to remember just how huge N.Flying were in 2019 with their breakthrough hit Rooftop. For a short period, they were the K-pop band of note. Member changes and military enlistment complicated their run, leading to a precipitous drop in popularity with the general public. Now, their music feels almost interchangeable with their FNC peers, pleasing fans but struggling to break through beyond that.

Everlasting (만년설) is another nice song — perfectly sturdy but wholly forgettable. It’s amazing how different their current material is from the personality-rich pop rock of their debut era. There’s definitely a drive to become “serious artists,” whatever that might mean. Everlasting has all the hallmarks needed to be taken seriously, but forgets a melody worth repeating. In this way, the song spins its wheels, hinging on relatively flat refrains that sounds worthy even as it keeps you at arm’s length. I could hear this soundtracking a drama where you’re already invested in the characters and plot, but on its own Everlasting tends to fade into the background.
