Alice in Chains had its “Sea of Sorrow,” but Sheffield, UK, blackened post-metal outfit, Ba’al, are only dipping into a “Well of Sorrows” on their latest single from their upcoming sophomore effort, The Fine Line Between Heaven and Here. This quintet—Nick Gosling (guitars), Chris Mole (guitars), Luke Rutter (drums), Richard Spencer (bass), Joe Stamps (vocals)—offer up a moody 11-minute epic that starts gently, and builds through a series of alternatingly terse/crushing and melodic/haunting passages. Stamps uses his voice in a variety of ways—from a black rasp/screech to a quasi-melodic scream—while his bandmates keep a tight range on the musical tempest around him.
The Fine Line Between Heaven and Here was produced, engineered and mixed by Joe Clayton (Conjurer, Dawnwalker, Ithaca) at No Studio, and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege. It’s set to be released on July 18 on multiple formats and digitally via Road To Masochist. At some point, preorders will be available here.

“‘Well of Sorrows’ is a short story told through the perspective of the recurring dream of someone who has lost someone close to them through suicide. While drenched in grief, sadness and regret there is also a lot of love contained within too.”
