Capy Castaway Interview: Kitten Cup Studio Talks Heart, Music, and More

Gamers Heroes

I have to say I loved reading all about the capybara case of Bonnie and Clyde – it made international headlines! I know the team mentioned that Capy Castaway will feature a heartfelt journey – what are some other stories and the like that have sparked joy for this title?

Kitten Cup Studio

There are a few stories that we like to look to for inspiration– I think Spirited Away does a beautiful job of creating a fantastical world that hints at something more, and Capy Castaway has a similar premise of being swept away and needing to adapt. In the same vein, we reference the mood of Over The Garden Wall, and how they were able to capture a dream-like and nostalgic feeling through their characters and design. Scott Pilgrim is also a favourite of mine, and it’s been very influential in my style of humor– plus it was one of the first pieces of media I read growing up that really showcased Toronto, the place I lived, and I’ve always loved that.

Gamers Heroes

What are some of the takeaways from Pekoe that you’re looking to apply to Capy Castaway? Any chance we can catch a cuppa in this new adventure?

Kitten Cup Studio

Pekoe grew from a feeling of ‘wanting to make a cup of tea’ captured as a video game– Capy Castaway builds on that same intuitive desire of play-inspired game design. As we play, it’s very easy to see what peaks our curiosity and makes for a fun toy or mechanic. I won’t make any promises yet, but you may catch Capy carrying a cup or two of something brewed!

Gamers Heroes

I saw that Capy Castaway will be at Toronto Games Week again! How will this year’s event compare? What was the Pekoe event like? Would love to hear some stories!

Kitten Cup Studio

I think this year will quite literally be bigger than last year– we’ll be one of the games projected on the side of the Maltings as part of the Toronto Giant Video Games & TGW Kickoff Thursday evening. Plus, we’ll be showing a demo at XP Summit and our annual Kitten Cup Tea Party on Saturday. Last year we had a nice turnout, and we ran the stamp rally with our exclusive sparkly Sae sticker as a giveaway; this year we’ll have an exclusive Capy sticker as well, which I’m excited for too (can you tell I love merch?). Plus, I love that we’ve continued the tradition of our Tea Pose, where we get everyone to stand in a t-pose and we take a photo.

Gamers Heroes

I saw that Capy Castaway will feature composer Mark Sparling (A Short Hike) – fantastic taste! What’s it been like working with him on this score?

Kitten Cup Studio

I have a lot of fun working with Mark, since most of our meetings are me doing some ridiculous voice and asking ‘something like this…does that make sense?’ and he just understands and turns it into something amazing. For Capy Castaway, since you’ll be navigating different areas in the world, we wanted a bit more of an organic approach to how the music blends together, similar to A Short Hike and Untitled Goose Game. The Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door remake also had some great inspiration with the character’s dialogue sounds.

With Capy Castaway launching in 2026, what final flourishes are you looking to add to the title in the coming months?

Kitten Cup Studio

Our favourite things to add are what we call ‘enrichment activities’ or ‘enrichment items’. It comes from playing Zoo Tycoon/Planet Zoo mostly, but it’s the items that you add to the habitats that they can play with…I think it’s fitting, too, since we have zoo animals in our game.

Capy Castaway is set to launch in 2026 for both the PC via Steam and consoles.

Fans can see more of Capy Castaway news during Toronto Games Week, happening from June 12-18.

Thank you to PR for arranging this interview, and Kitten Cup Studios for their time!
