Song Review: Catch The Young – Ideal Type

When it comes to K-idol bands, it takes a lot to capture my attention. I’d consider myself a fan of rock music, but it’s not what I flock to the Korean music scene for because I can get my rock fix pretty much anywhere. With that said, Catch The Young have had my attention since the beginning due to their bright, youthful concept. Plus they feature a keytar, which is the coolest instrument ever invented. But even with these assets, no song has yet connected with me in the way I’d hope.

New single Ideal Type (이상형) might come the closest to fulfilling the group’s potential. It’s bright, energetic and catchy. And, it earns bonus goodwill for being strongly tied to my favorite season for pop music: summer. The song’s opening verse is pure bubblegum bliss, bounding forward with uplifting melodies and tons of spirit. I’m less convinced by the chorus, though I’m slowly coming around to its relatively subdued structure. In general, I love melodies that open on a high note and gradually coast downward, and this is a strong feature here. I have a feeling Ideal Type might be the kind of song that unveils its potential slowly and surely rather than hit you hard right out of the gate. I can already envision it sounding fantastic on a sunny day, volume cranked up.
