Track Premiere: Picking Up Change with Fuck Money’s “Belts”

Years ago I made a deal with myself to stop worrying about money. “Self,” I told myself, “if you live life with the mentality of Seinfeld’s ‘Even Steven’ episode or how Fat Mike from NOFX and Ministry’s Al Jourgensen have both managed to stay alive and ‘thrive’ while living like drunken degenerates without a care in the world, then, I figured, it’d do my blood pressure a lot of good to stop nickel-and-diming myself and trust that everything that needs to be taken care of would be taken care of.” Yes, I recognise how this sounds eerily like that law of attraction bullshit, but maybe there’s something to that bullshit because I can’t say that it hasn’t worked to my advantage. I may not be rich, but at least I’m not worried about not being rich.

Part of achieving all of the above is essentially saying “fuck money” and trying to not have the almighty dollar rule my waking hours. When Austin-based thrashing noise rockers Fuck Money came to my attention, it was in large part because due to their moniker. Though with quotes from their bio like “Fuck Money is not just a band — it’s a confrontation” and “Fuck Money isn’t here to entertain — they’re here to explode” the quartet seem to be more about making vitriolic statements about capitalism and socio-political structures as opposed to being cavalier about their finances or literally sticking their dicks in change jars.

The band’s self-titled debut full-length is set for release later this summer and today we’re giving y’all a little taste of things to come with an advance airing of the song “Belts” of which the band has the following to say: “In reference to the song’s lyrics. ‘Fashion Homicide’ is a death of an art form, artistic social movement, or original creation at the hand of commodification. This is our first single off our debut LP — and our first release after a year-long vanishing act. Now we’re back and we’re fucking stoked to finally drop this record. Our writing process is an act of capturing energy and our chaotic musical impulses then succinctly forming those moments into songs. That energy is steeped in our existential and sociopolitical realities, however, we’re never committed to one style or approach. We prefer to innovate. To honour that philosophy, we chose this track as the first single because it doesn’t sound like the rest of the album. It’s deceptively simple compared to the other songs. One of us even teared up while listening to it on the drive home from rehearsal, so we took that as a good sign. Needless to say, this song is important to us on an emotional and personal level. If you’re bold enough to press play you will be handsomely rewarded.”

Other quotes about the song:

“This is going to scare people out of making their own records”.

—Jesse F. Keeler (Mastering/Death From Above 1979)

“This latest track veers from the sonic chaos & carnage Fuck Money is known for – trading sharpness & angularity for something more stripped down & strangely beautiful. Pulling from the fringes of post-punk & noise, the band strips it all back to reveal a jagged new skin. It’s still Fuck Money – but colder, more refined, and dangerously intentional. It’s not what you’re expecting from Fuck Money. And that’s exactly the point.”
