Swedish duo Frusen Sorg are a new entity but the band’s members, drummer Sandström and bassist/vocalist Kalle Mattsson are not new to music, playing in bands like Jeniferever, Literature, Stiu Nu Stiu and Möuth since the ’90s. Frusen Sorg is heavier than those bands, dwelling somewhere between black metal, hardcore punk and Sweden’s instantly-recognizable brand of melodic crust.
Their debut EP, Jag Springer Med Avbrutna Ben, weighs in at a concise four songs, each one trimmed down to the bare essentials. In English, the title means “I’m Running With Broken Legs” and that urgency certainly translates in the music; the songwriting is direct and frantic, mixing fist-pumping catchiness with more extreme tendencies.
“This is the most condensed and corrosive thing we’ve done together since we started making music together in 1995,” Frusen Sorg tell Decibel. “We finally bypassed all inhibitions and plugged the cord straight into our reptilian brain. Trauma, anxiety and PTSD ruin most aspects of life, but in a rehearsal space this horrible beauty emerges if you let it. We wanted it to sound like what it is, unhinged people in a room making unfiltered music as a way of secular exorcism.”
