Above all else, the design of your bedroom should inspire you to unwind and fall into a restful sleep.

Any colour can work well in moderation, but if you’re looking to drench the walls in one hue? We think blue is your best bet for creating a bedroom that feels contemporary, yet still calming and cosy.

The first step is picking the right type of blue. Navy shades might feel a bit too deep; whilst powder blue can veer a little too much into ‘baby decor’ territory, if you’re not careful.

Some of our favourite designers like Studio Doherty and Studio Ceravolo show how it’s done in their recent projects, opting for a pale blue-grey walls — a colour that looks especially great in spaces with some heritage flair.

This subtle backdrop allows you to add depth, layering in other cool-toned shades and accents of brighter colour to enliven the space.

Think fun accessories like Cult’s Rotate Trolley SC73 in an eye-catching cobalt blue, or textural furnishings such as DOMO’s Ligne Roset Ruché Bed, with its luxurious quilted upholstered headboard.

The Escape Loop Molly carpet from Supertuft in grey also works perfectly with the scheme, offering a textural base that feels luxurious underfoot.

And don’t be afraid to warm up the interiors with complimentary colours in small doses. A gold accent cushion, a beige sideboard, or a rattan lamp will provide visual balance, without distracting from the soothing atmosphere you’ve cultivated.

Playing with similar hues in your artwork and bedlinen is another good option to inject some personality into the space.

Finish it off with the glow of the Rice Paper Shade from HAY (or any soft, semi-translucent pendant lighting) and you’ll have a sophisticated sanctuary, ready to lull you to sleep!
