Song Review: TXT – Sunday Driver (Soobin solo)

TXT’s new (full) album weighs in at eight tracks and a paltry twenty-one minutes. This brevity isn’t unique to TXT and I don’t mean to call them out specifically, but it’s representative of choices the K-pop industry is currently making. So much effort seems to go into everything surrounding the music, even as the actual songs grow shorter and less developed. In this case, that effort includes music videos for each of the members’ solo tracks. In keeping with the truncated nature of the album, I’ll be writing mini reviews for each song as the videos are released.

Apart from Yeonjun and Beomgyu, we haven’t heard how each members’ solo work might sound on a promoted track. With Sunday Driver, Soobin has opted for easy listening. Because of this, I’m still not quite sure how he sees himself as a soloist (or if he sees himself as a soloist at all). The song wafts by on pleasant vibes, from the gentle strum of guitar to the soft sprinkle of atmospheric synth. Soobin’s airy tone compliments this sound, though everything here is so lightweight that it almost evaporates as it goes. It’s a gentle toe-tapper but doesn’t do much to grab me beyond that.
