From the smoke-choked crypts of Portland rises Tar Pit, casting long shadows with their latest doom-soaked incantation, “Jubilee.” We’re premiering the video for this haunting slab of eldritch doom—a term the band doesn’t just invoke, but embodies.
Taken from their full-length Scrying the Angel Gate (released August 1 via Transylvanian Recordings), “Jubilee” lumbers forth with the ancient weight of Sabbath and Candlemass, but with a spectral sheen that’s all its own. It’s a funeral march laced with narcotic melody—at once punishing and prayerful. Vocalist Don Gonzalo delivers his lamentations like a cursed preacher, while the band (guitarists Papa Stefano and Poncho Kid, bassist Old Saint John, and drummer Mack the Professional) conjure riffs that seem to drag time itself behind them.
Filmed live at Metalmania in Portland’s historic Star Theater by Blue Heron Video, “Jubilee” captures Tar Pit at their most raw and unrestrained, the embodiment of the Eldritch Doom Syndicate. Between the sweat-soaked stage shots, the video interlaces surreal glimpses from the Syndicate’s ongoing quest to achieve the DOOM WORLD ORDER. Consider this your formal invitation: Join the Syndicate today.
The video’s grainy, flickering visuals—steeped in the language of VHS occultism—suit the track’s funereal pace and mood perfectly. There’s no escape here, no chorus hook to latch onto. Only the slow rot of reality, refracted through minor-key misery and mystical dread.
Fans of classic doom will find plenty to worship here, but Tar Pit aren’t content to merely echo the past. “Jubilee” hints at a broader palette—moments of unexpected beauty, rhythmic syncopation (clave in doom? Yes.), and a creeping narrative depth that rewards repeated viewings.
Scrying the Angel Gate features appearances from Fuzz (R.I.P.) and Paul H (LIVSSYKE), and was mastered by doom legend Thomas Andrew Doyle (TAD, Brothers of the Sonic Cloth) at Ape Witch Studios. If “Jubilee” is the opening ritual, consider this your invitation to step through the gate.
