We won’t belabor this Labor Day post, because the featured band, Portuguese grinders Besta, do their best to bash out their latest single, “Estrela Negra” in concise fashion, just slightly over a minute. The blistering stab of Euro grindcore comes straight outta Lisbon and is sung in the quartet’s native language, which is no problem to follow along with, because all the words are helpfully provided in the accompanying video. The track is taken from John Carpenter Redux, a reimagined version of their 2014 album John Carpenter, which was the band’s—Lafayette (drums), Rick Chain (guitars), Paulo Rui (vocals), Ricardo Matias (bass)—tribute to American horror director John Carpenter. This updated version has been remixed and features newly recorded vocals.
The album is set for release on vinyl and digitally via Raging Planet Records on October 4. Preorders will be available soon via the links here.
The band had this to say about its new single:
“’Estrela Negra’ is our nod to Carpenter’s 1974 cult classic Dark Star. That movie was already dealing with themes like AI and colonization way ahead of its time, and we wanted to channel that spirit. The track is stark, raw, and straight to the point, a story about a sentient machine that sets the perfect tone for what John Carpenter Redux is all about.”
