While video games still don’t enjoy the same widespread respect as movies, there’s no doubt that there has been a concerted effort to make the medium more cinematic. Character models are increasingly lifelike, narratives have become emotionally complex and pre-rendered (and sometimes in-game) cutscenes are rivaling the quality of 3D animated features. Hell, even some of Hollywood’s finest can’t escape the gaming industry’s siren song—just ask Keanu Reeves, Guillermo del Toro and Norman Reedus. And seeing as we’re only a few months away from this year’s festivities at Decibel Magazine Metal & Beer Fest: Denver 2025, your faithful co-nerds had the perfect excuse to reach out to Oklahoma noisemongers and cinephiles Chat Pile to see if anyone was willing to talk nerdy to us.
Enter, stage left: guitarist Luther Manhole. The lifelong Nintendo fan and admirer of legendary director Hideo Kojima steps up as our latest player character to explore the overlap of the silver screen and the personal computer. Though the six-string slinger shares his thoughts on video game adaptations of films and vice versa, he finds that what he needs out of his digital distractions oftentimes really isn’t that deep. Beyond that, Manhole discusses his love of the game thanks to his gamer grandma, his growing PS2 collection, the allure of tabletop gaming and how the concept of “fun” isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. We promise that this installment is worth making it to the end credits.
